The vision for Cantera Ranch was originally developed out of the experiences of J. A. Lavender Jr., who was a devoted outdoorsman and hunter all over the U.S., but he particularly enjoyed the Texas Hill Country. His son, Jim, having been brought up with the same passion for wildlife, spent several years managing his company's game ranch near Llano, Texas. That experience led to the purchase of Cantera Ranch near Priddy, Texas. Jim and his son Scott have been committed to creating a wildlife habitat that is ideally suited for the birds and animals of the Texas Hill Country. After our first six years of strict management of the ranches' high fenced habitat, promoting superior genetics, and maximum nutrition, we have decided to share the best of breed whitetails, turkeys, black buck, mouflon sheep and axis deer to those who will appreciate Cantera Ranch.

Cantera Ranch was established in 1999 and is owned and operated by the Lavender family. The ranch was purchased to provide friends and family an opportunity to enjoy God's creation. The hallmark feature of Cantera Ranch is a large limestone rock quarry. The limestone from this quarry was mined, crushed and used to construct state highway 16.
